Jurassic World Rebirth Revisits the Legacy of Jurassic Park

Universal Pictures just dropped the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, a summer release for July 2, 2025. Following in the footsteps of Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Dominion, the new teaser gives viewers one last look at this upcoming installment in the franchise just in time for its Fourth of July weekend release.

The fourth Jurassic World film and seventh in the Jurassic franchise overall, Rebirth is being billed as a soft reset for the series while also drawing heavily on its DNA—pun intended. In the film, Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali star as a team of specialists deployed to the original Jurassic Park research island for a new mission, and the returning crew will face a potent mix of personal drama and classic blockbuster thrills in the year’s most summer-ready dinosaur movie.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be directed by Gareth Edwards, who helmed 2014’s Godzilla, and is written by David Koepp, who wrote both Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the sequel. Koepp has been collaborating with Edwards to co-write the screenplay for Rebirth.

The official synopsis notes that the plot takes place five years after Jurassic World Dominion, where the Earth has become an inhospitable place for the dinosaur population. Small bands of dinosaur survivors now inhabit biodiversity preserves in equatorial latitudes, a means to preserve their dwindling numbers by simulating an ecosystem as close to their original environment as possible. In one of these tropical ecosystems are the largest land, sea, and air dinosaurs on the planet, each of which is pregnant with a valuable genetic code said to contain the key to a life-saving miracle drug. Scarlett Johansson plays Zora Bennett, a covert ops specialist assigned to lead a team on a top-secret mission to secure that genetic code at all costs.

The team’s mission comes into conflict with a family out for a boating vacation when a team of aquatic dinosaurs decimates their boat. Forced to team up, the family and a splinter group of Bennett’s team have to survive on a long-forgotten island off the coast of Costa Rica that was once home to a Jurassic Park research lab. As the team uncovers evidence of the lab’s true purpose, they learn that what the island was used for may be even more dangerous than dinosaurs.

Meet the Team (and Dinosaurs) in Jurassic World Rebirth

Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali lead the film’s ensemble cast alongside Rupert Friend (Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical rep with a shady history), Jonathan Bailey (paleontologist Henry Loomis), and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked family). Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda all star as Delgado’s children, and Bechir Sylvain also appears as a member of Bennett’s team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge have roles in the film, but their characters have not been revealed.

The majority of the footage used in this trailer was featured in the first teaser for Jurassic World Rebirth that came out earlier this February, and the latest trailer reuses and remixes much of that footage to emphasize key concepts and shots that have dominated the film’s marketing thus far. A montage of shots from the earlier trailer kicks off this one before moving on to a scene of a hapless lab technician wearing a hazmat suit. The employee is alone in a lab until a large T-Rex crashes through a window and corners the worker—her screams are drowned out by the noise and fury of their new reptilian roommate, and it’s too late to escape. From here on, it’s clear what the film will look like and be like: expect the big-budget action, edge-of-your-seat tension, and just plain gnarly dinosaur attacks.

One of the highlights of the trailer is also one of the film’s set pieces—an attempted robbery at a nest of pterosaur eggs. An unidentified character says that these eggs are from “Quetz, a flying carnivore the size of an F-16,” which is most likely Quetzalcoatlus northropi. We also see glimpses of the raptors, which have quickly become a franchise staple, and a new dinosaur: the mosasaur. A character also says that the island was used as “a dumping ground for the worst of the worst”—dinosaurs with the most dangerous and volatile temperaments from the original batch that were cloned by the park.

While it’s being marketed as a fresh reboot for the series, Rebirth is also putting its money where its dinosaur heart is by reaching back into the original Jurassic Park concept to play with franchise nostalgia and a new take on familiar franchise favorites like its crew of dinosaurs. Whether or not the film resets the franchise is a question for another time, but the film has all the tropes in place to do it: an expert team of mercenaries, an egg with life-saving drugs, shades of gray, and, of course, one hell of a mess of dinosaurs.

Jurassic World Rebirth trailer is not afraid of the action, either. The audience gets to see several last-second escapes, whether it be in the form of characters running through thick jungles to escape angry predators, hiding underwater in shipwrecked remains, or doing everything they can to outrun their enormous, extinct prey. Johansson, in particular, looks to be a grittier and more action-oriented take on the traditional heroes we normally get in these films.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be available for viewing in theaters nationwide when it releases on July 2, 2025.
