Snoop Dogg has found himself embroiled in a new controversy over LGBTQ+ inclusivity in children’s films after telling a podcast that he didn’t know how to explain the presence of a same-sex couple to his grandson. While appearing on Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast last week, the veteran rapper spoke about taking his grandson to see Pixar’s 2022 film Lightyear — the spinoff of the popular Toy Story animated franchise — and getting tripped up when he needed to explain its two moms to the child.

“I was like, I’m a little boy and a little girl,” Snoop recalled. “Why, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” he continued, questioning why such a family was included in the film. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie,” he quipped before telling his grandson to wait until the end of the film to ask questions.

The scene in question involves a brief kiss between two women in the film. Disney briefly removed it following criticism at the time, but reinstated it the moment after internal criticism and pressure to be more inclusive.

“You see, here I am, I can’t wake up,” he continued. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he added. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

Snoop’s biggest issue, he explained on the podcast, is with the fact that the child in his care felt comfortable asking questions during the film, while he didn’t have the answers and wanted to enjoy the film. “It threw me for a loop,” he said. “These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Reaction and Context

As PinkNews noted, the remarks quickly raised the hackles of progressive audiences online, with many calling on the Australian Football League (AFL) to scrap Snoop Dogg’s scheduled performance at the sport’s Grand Final later this year. The AFL has not provided any indication that they plan to remove Snoop, however, and their chief executive, Gillon McLachlan, defended the performance in a press conference on Tuesday, per PinkNews. He told reporters that the league was committed to diversity and inclusion in the sport, but would not be commenting on any individuals.

Lightyear was previously a subject of controversy among conservatives during its own release. When the film hit theaters in June 2022, several conservatives objected to the same-sex kiss. In June, The Daily Wire’s host Matt Walsh even announced a campaign to boycott the film entirely due to the “gay propaganda.”

Disney briefly pulled the film due to the criticism, but restored it after Pixar employees and LGBTQ+ activists spoke out about its importance to the franchise and queer representation. Chris Evans, the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the film, even spoke out at the time against those upset with the inclusion.

“The real truth is those people are idiots,” he said in an interview with Reuters Television. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Lightyear served as an origin film for Pixar’s wildly successful Toy Story universe. The focus of the animated film was on the real Buzz Lightyear, the character within the Toy Story films that the Buzz Lightyear toy action figure is based on. Buzz is an intergalactic space ranger in the science-fiction canon of the world that Woody and Buzz find themselves in. The sequel to the Toy Story prequel Lightyear was the highly successful Lightyear spinoff, which underperformed with $226 million worldwide despite an investment of $200 million.
