Spock Teaches Vulcan Humor in Strange New Worlds Season 3

Paramount+ has released an official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The trailer was released on Thursday, July 11, and fans can expect the next season to premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025. This is a change from the previous release date, which was the third week of July. This will be the first new season of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series on Paramount+.

Fans were only provided with a short teaser in April, so this is the first official look at the upcoming season. The new trailer begins with a recap of the final moments of season 2. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with the U.S.S. Enterprise under a surprise attack by Gorn forces while they were invading a Federation colony world. While Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the rest of the crew tried to survive, several members of the crew and other survivors of the attack were taken as hostages by the Gorn.

Pike and the rest of the Enterprise crew were given an order by Starfleet to stand down, but Pike also had the option of trying to save the hostages. Pike chose to disobey orders and try to rescue the hostages, and the next season of the show will pick up right where season 2 left off.

A brief clip from the new season was first shown at New York City Comic-Con last October. It begins with a high-energy space battle scene, which is a trademark of the series. It shows the Enterprise as they are fighting off Gorn forces. As the crew maneuvers to avoid incoming fire from the Gorn, the trailer will likely give viewers more information about the new villains that the crew will face in the new season.

Fans have been expecting the war with the Gorn to come to an end, and it will, but a new enemy is coming. The crew of the Enterprise will be tested in new ways as the new season will focus on their loyalty, bravery, and perseverance. The crew and their captain, Pike, will face new enemies, putting their lives and the safety of the ship on the line.

Season 3 will also contain episodes that are different from past Star Trek series. The series has been noted to move away from the typical Trek format and instead feature episodes with faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery. In addition, Strange New Worlds has said that there will be genre shifts that have not been seen on other Star Trek series.

All the main and recurring cast members from the first two seasons will be returning for the third season. Fans will also be introduced to several new characters on the Enterprise. Among those joining the cast is Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be joining the cast as Dr. Roger Korby. Dr. Korby was first introduced in the Star Trek franchise in Star Trek: The Original Series by Michael Strong. In the timeline of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Dr. Korby was a celebrated archaeologist who specialized in medical archaeology and was the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Chapel and Spock (Ethan Peck) have grown close, however, so the return of Korby will no doubt have professional and personal ramifications for Chapel.

Guest star actors Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt will also be joining the cast in the third season. Both actors are no strangers to the comedy genre, so it will be interesting to see what they bring to their respective characters. In the brief April teaser, it was shown that there will be episodes that mix up the action, but there will be a few episodes that focus on lighter fare and side-stories. The new trailer hammers that point home, as it shows the crew bonding with each other in some lighthearted moments as they face serious but fun subplots and the occasional volatile scientific mishap.

The trailer also teases that Spock’s future alternate counterpart and original Captain of the Enterprise, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), will appear in the new season. Kirk is seen in the captain’s chair, where he is being given some advice from Pike about the burden of command. The trailer does not give any indication of how or why Kirk is there, but he will likely play an active role in the events of the third season. It is made clear in that scene, however, that Kirk’s time in the chair will be brief. Pike tells Kirk, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”

The trailer ends on a comedic note, a rare moment in a Trek series that has seen some humor but does not always lean into that aspect. Oswalt’s Vulcan character is being shown how to give a “high five” by Spock. The Vulcan successfully hits Spock the first time, but he “pulls a slow one” after being told to go “down low.” The bewildered Vulcan asks, “Why would you do that?” to which Spock simply replies, “Because you are too slow.”
