The detection of a new air leak in the International Space Station (ISS) has raised concerns at NASA and resulted in the postponement of the scheduled Axiom Mission 4 launch. NASA and Roscosmos have halted the planned launch of the commercial mission that was supposed to transport four astronauts to the space station as they continue their joint investigation. NASA confirmed the postponement but chose not to reveal many specific details about it. Several sources indicate that the leak represents a significant problem because many of the ISS hardware systems have now reached nearly three decades in space.

The station has previously encountered air leaks. The ISS started experiencing a gradual loss of pressure beginning in 2019. Astronauts had established that the transfer tunnel in the Russian Zvezda service module which is one of the International Space Station’s oldest components was responsible for the leak. The PrK section serves as a connection point between the Zvezda module and a docking port that receives Soyuz crew capsules and Progress supply ships. Russian cosmonauts tried multiple repair methods to fix the small cracks in this area throughout the years. The repair attempts slowed the air loss down to a couple of pounds per day but they didn’t succeed in halting it completely. The most successful solution involved sealing the PrK module hatch and only opening it when docking operations required access.

Roscosmos revealed this month that their repairs on the PrK module reached completion and achieved complete sealing while NASA confirmed cessation of leaks in the same module. At first, observers considered this achievement to be a substantial advance. However, things quickly became confusing. The air pressure on the ISS kept falling even after the PrK leak was reportedly repaired. Two sources confirmed the ISS continued to lose pressure but none could identify the leak’s location.

Experts currently suspect that faulty hatch seals leading into the PrK module could be the cause of the problem. The PrK interior may no longer leak but compromised seals around the hatch could permit air from the rest of the station to flow into the PrK. The PrK module would maintain consistent pressure despite the overall International Space Station experiencing a drop in pressure. NASA faces a challenging problem that remains difficult to solve which has led them to adopt a careful strategy. A senior industry source informed Ars Technica that NASA leaders are expressing their concern about the current situation and how it might impact ISS structural stability.

NASA postponed the originally Thursday-scheduled Axiom Mission 4 launch due to current developments. In a brief statement, the agency said: NASA and Roscosmos now have extra time to assess the situation before deciding if further action is needed due to the delay of Axiom Mission 4.

There’s another layer of concern: The ongoing leaks might indicate high cycle fatigue within the structure. When metals such as aluminum experience continuous stress cycles over time they develop a condition that affects the structural integrity of the ISS. A metal clothes hanger will eventually break when you bend it back and forth repeatedly. This same principle applies to spacecraft. Metal fatigue can produce cracks that lead to unexpected, severe breakdowns just like the 1988 Aloha Airlines disaster when aircraft fuselage separation happened mid-flight.

NASA’s risk assessments assign structural cracking on the ISS the utmost concern level on their 5-by-5 internal matrix which evaluates threat probability and severity because of these potential outcomes. The crew faces no current danger but potential long-term effects pose serious concerns.

NASA has decided against releasing additional information and has not organized a press conference to discuss the matter. In response to media inquiries, the agency has reiterated a single point: The International Space Station crew maintains their standard operations within a safe environment.

Still, the silence leaves many questions unanswered. The International Space Station’s age combined with wear on its systems makes the recent leak an obvious illustration of the difficulties in keeping a space laboratory operational after many years. Engineers continue their efforts to find answers to the mystery while the world stands by for a definitive solution.
