From survival to offense: Invasion Season 3 turns the tables

You may have completely missed it, but Invasion is the third of Apple TV+’s three big-budget sci-fi dramas that can stand proudly alongside Silo and Foundation. The show has attracted a small but devoted following since its debut, and a divided critical response — it was hit early on with the usual Season 1 slow-burn pacing, and even some ardent fans have confessed to having a love/hate relationship with the show over the years.

Still, there have been points of strength: even if it hasn’t always hit the mark, the show has been consistently ambitious with its tone and has sought to create a more thought-provoking, strikingly original series with sometimes audacious, always admirably bold themes. We have high hopes for Season 3 after the series’ new trailer hints that Invasion is finally beginning to realize its full potential.

Co-created by Hunters writer/showrunner David Weil and auteur producer/writer Simon Kinberg (director/producer of a half-dozen X-Men films, and Oscar-nominated producer/writer on the Matt Damon space drama The Martian), the premise has always been an interesting one, even if the early focus has made the central conceit less clear-cut to viewers. The approach has always been to tell the story of an alien invasion in the most personal way possible, from the ground up. Told from the perspective of ordinary people from different walks of life in different corners of the world, the show has found relatable, human perspectives on the global alien invasion. Spoken languages in Invasion include English, Japanese, and Pashto.

Season 1 focused on the initial stages of the alien incursion. As such, the mysterious, insectoid aliens themselves have often been background to the overwhelming emotional and interpersonal dramas of the characters, something that has frustrated some viewers who tuned in expecting a more conventional action-heavy alien-invasion blockbuster. But it was a creative choice that also established the tone of Invasion as a more intimate and distinctly character-driven take on sci-fi storytelling.

The cliffhanger ending of Season 1, of course, was that the full invasion from the aliens became unavoidable. Season 2 ramped things up with more action, more high stakes, and the show found a new energy as it explored how the smaller group of characters adapted and survived in this new, very different world. Human beings had been forced into small, walled-in safe zones across the world, and survival itself often meant making untenable choices. The pacing may still have been deliberate, but the storylines had new propulsion, and it set up perfectly for Season 3’s big shakeup.

Season 3 Brings the Characters Together to Face the Aliens in a High-Stakes Mission

Season 3 of Invasion picks up two years later, and as the new trailer and official premise make clear, the threat has mutated and evolved in truly terrifying new ways. The perspectives will no longer be separate but now collide for the very first time. As in previous seasons, each of the main characters has found themselves on different continents around the world. But this time, for the first time, the major characters will band together to attempt a high-risk, extremely dangerous mission: infiltrating the alien mothership. It is a major turning point for the show, which has placed a heavy emphasis on disjointed storylines so far.

The insects have reached their “apex” form, with the deadly tendrils extending from the ships wreaking destruction across the planet. The new trailer spells out the stakes perfectly: it will take all of the skills, knowledge, and grit of every single survivor to have even a slim chance at protecting and preserving humanity. Of course, as the team comes together for this new mission, there will be new alliances to make — and old relationships that may not survive the challenge.

The returning cast includes Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the divisive tech-preneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. The one new series regular is Erika Alexander, another formidable presence who will help further diversify the international Invasion cast.

Season 3 is the place where the show can double down on a chance to hit big story beats and tie up some of the long-running character arcs. At the same time, fans who have been waiting for the large-scale action and alien showdown since Season 1 may get a taste of what they’ve been waiting for. It is a chance to finally show what an Invasion epic can be, while not sacrificing the qualities that have made the show special.

We’re not saying Invasion is the only series you should be keeping your eyes on in 2025, but it is one of the few sci-fi shows — never mind original sci-fi series — that truly has a shot at going “galactically” big, as the trailer would have it. If Invasion can use its season 3 as a chance to convince the naysayers, then the series could be turning a corner towards must-watch status. It’ll be interesting to see whether the potential for a merging of the two — its human, emotional center with some bigger set pieces, higher stakes, and the level of urgency needed to go big — will be the final push it needs.
