Nine teenagers have been arrested in the shooting death of a 16-year-old in Florence County, South Carolina. Trey Dean Wright was killed on June 24 after a confrontation with other teens, according to authorities, that had allegedly been “set up by multiple people” and was over “a girl.” Investigators say the fatal incident was at least partially caught on video by one of the suspects.
Wright was shot multiple times, and deputies from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office found him dead along First Neck Road on June 24. The road where his body was found is in a rural area of the county about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway. Raper, according to a statement from officials, fired the fatal shots after he and Wright got into an “argument over a female that escalated.”
Officials now allege that Raper had help before and after the killing. They have announced arrests in recent weeks and said the suspects aided in luring Wright to the place where the shooter waited, knowing he was armed and vowing to shoot the teen. Among those arrested is the victim’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital that she is finding the legal process difficult to endure. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” Lindsey said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
As a rite of passage, he was a healthy person, she continued, “and all of a sudden he’s gone. He had his whole life in front of him.” His mother has spoken of her son often, both on her Facebook page and in interviews.
Law enforcement officials say the incident was “captured on video” by at least one of the suspects. Deputies also announced last week that additional arrests were being made in the case. Officials say several teenagers are being held in connection with Wright’s killing for allegedly helping to set him up to be shot by Raper.
Three Additional Teens Arrested for Murder
Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office told WBTW-TV that multiple teens had been involved in “bringing” the “actual shooter” to the place where Raper was waiting for Wright. “The other teens were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said.
“In addition to that, the victims were presented with a firearm by Raper, and they made threats to the victim that they would shoot him,” he added, citing arrest warrants. South Carolina law gives prosecutors leeway to charge teens as adults for serious crimes such as murder. Officials confirmed that was the case for at least five suspects.
“The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn explained. Three Myrtle Beach-area teens were later arrested and charged with murder in addition to Raper. They are 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns.
Authorities told local media that all the teens were involved in the same scheme to bring Wright and Raper together, though prosecutors are charging the three with direct murder offenses, too. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said in an interview with local reporters. “The sad thing is,you’veu got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Prosecutors charged Raper with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The courts have set his bond at “none,” meaning that he will remain in custody until trial. Kendall was also charged with murder, and officials have set his bond at “none.” Belviso and Kearns were each arrested and released last week on a $20,000 surety bond.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Rick Morris said the agency is “conducting a thorough investigation and is not releasing additional information at this time.” Prosecutors declined to discuss specifics of the case. Wright’s mother, meanwhile, is still in mourning and occasionally rants in exasperation about the drawn-out court system.
Her anger is multiplied, she said in an interview with Fox News Digital, by the fact that her son’s girlfriend and several of his friends are facing charges for their roles in setting up his murder. The shooting has also raised questions in the community about the ability of teen disputes, peer pressure, and access to guns to lead to deadly results.
